Cruise Line's Disability Access Policy Raises Concerns

Wheelchair Users Required to Bring Own Collapsible Device

Norwegian Cruise Line's policy has left some passengers feeling excluded

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is facing criticism for its policy requiring wheelchair users to bring their own collapsible wheelchairs on board. The policy, which was recently updated, has left some passengers feeling excluded and discriminated against.

"I'm a wheelchair user, and I was really looking forward to cruising with NCL," said one passenger who contacted us about the policy. "But when I found out that I had to bring my own wheelchair, I was very disappointed. I don't have a collapsible wheelchair, and I can't afford to buy one. So now I'm not sure if I'll be able to cruise with NCL after all."

NCL's policy states that "wheelchairs must be collapsible and able to fit under the seat in front of you." The policy also states that "NCL does not provide wheelchairs for guest use." This means that wheelchair users who do not have a collapsible wheelchair will not be able to board NCL ships.

Disability advocates are calling on NCL to change its policy. They argue that the policy is discriminatory and violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

"The ADA requires businesses to provide reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities," said one advocate. "NCL's policy does not meet this requirement. It is discriminatory and it needs to be changed."

NCL has not yet responded to the criticism. However, the company has a history of being responsive to complaints about its disability access policies. In 2010, NCL settled a lawsuit with the U.S. Department of Justice over its failure to provide adequate access for wheelchair users.

We will continue to follow this story and provide updates as they become available.
