The Calabar burrowing python (Calabaria reinhardtii) is a small, non-venomous snake native to the rainforests of West and Central Africa. Despite its name, this snake is primarily a burrower and rarely climbs trees. It is known for its docile nature and is often kept as a pet.
Physical Characteristics
The Calabar burrowing python has a thick, cylindrical body with a pointed head and smooth scales. Its coloration ranges from brown to black, with a series of dark blotches running along its back. Adults typically reach a length of 2-3 feet.
Behavior and Habitat
As mentioned earlier, the Calabar burrowing python is a terrestrial species. It spends most of its time hidden in burrows, under logs, or in leaf litter. It is primarily active at night, when it emerges to hunt for prey. Its diet consists mainly of small rodents and amphibians.
