Nurse Sharks: Gentle Giants of the Sea
An Introduction to the Unique and Fascinating Nurse Shark
Where Nurse Sharks Swim
Nurse sharks are found in warm tropical and subtropical waters off the coasts of the Americas, Africa, and Australia. They prefer shallow waters near coral reefs, seagrass beds, and mangrove forests.
Identifying Nurse Sharks
Nurse sharks are easily recognizable by their distinctive appearance. They are large sharks, reaching up to 10 feet (3 m) in length. Unlike most large shark species, nurse sharks are not grayish in coloration. Instead, they have a mottled brown or olive-green skin with pale spots.
Human-Nurse Shark Interactions
Nurse sharks are generally not aggressive towards humans. However, they can be harmful if provoked. While they are not often captured for food, nurse sharks are sometimes caught as bycatch in fishing nets.
